Adding to the increasing cases of farmer suicide in the recent days, a farmer from the taluk took extreme step here on Saturday.

The deceased farmer has been identified as Swamygowda (50), Javarikoppalu village in the taluk. He had taken loan from Cauvery Grameena Bank to cultivate tobacco at his three acres land.

Following crop loss, he was unable to repay the loan that forced him to end life, according to his family members. He leaves behind wife, three sons and a daughter.

Meanwhile, the members of Hasiru Sene took out a protest march in the town. They condemned the supine attitude of the authorities concerned, especially the managements of sugarcane factories for not settling the dues on time. Unable to pay the debts, the farmers are resorting to end lives.

The government should intervene and prevent recurring of such incidents in the State, they demanded. They also criticised the leaders of various political parties who visit the houses of the farmers only to shed crocodile tears. The leaders ignore the farmers when they knock on their doors for help, but announce compensation after their deaths.
