Grim situation in rural Karnataka

Conditions of people living in villages in Karnataka are grim as highest earning member of 69 per cent of rural households monthly income is up to Rs 5,000 per month or less than that.

According to Socio Economic and Caste Census (SECC) 2011, released here shows that of the 80.48 lakh rural households, 44.65 per cent ( 35.03 lakh) were engaged in cultivation which is higher than all India average of 30.10 per cent. Total 26.14 lakh families which is around 32.49 per cent were engaged in causal labour for livelihood.

Of the total household, only 9.47 per cent household having salaried jobs in which 3.86 per cent government jobs while 4.91 per cent families working in private sector.

Of the total household only 8.63 per cent (6.94 lakh) families having a person who’s salary is Rs 10,000 per month.

Total 17.55 per cent (16,31 lakh) house holds having two wheelers while only 6.07 per cent families have refrigerator. However 77. 38 per cent (62.28 lakh) households having mobile phone while 13 lakh families have no phones at all.

SCs worst affected

Living condition of Schedule Caste households are even worse as of the total 14.53 lakh families living in Karnataka 31.13 per cent (4.52 lakh) were land less while 3.33 per cent 48,348 living from income earned from salary.

The SECC 2011, also the first paperless census conducted on hand-held electronic devices by the government, carried out all 640 districts across the country under the aegis of the Rural Development Ministry.

Around 19. 85 lakh families living in one room house while 3 lakh families living in hut and 47, 118 families living in house made out of plastic sheet. In the state still 15, 375 families are engaged in manual scavenging while 9650 families were begging for living.
