Aug 28 is BBMP poll deadline: SEC

State Election Commissioner (SEC) P N Srinivasachary said the election process
for the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) should be completed by
August 28.

Talking to Deccan Herald, Srinivasachary said the Supreme Court has left no ambiguity regarding the polls and it has made it clear to complete the process by August 28, which includes finishing the counting process and declaring the results.

In the wake of the Supreme Court order, SEC has cancelled its election notification detailing the calendar of events and will publish a fresh notification in the coming days.

The Supreme Court order on Friday gave eight weeks to the Karnataka government and the SEC to hold BBMP polls.  On May 5, the court had given three months to the State government for holding BBMP elections. The period would have come to end on August 5. The SEC had already announced July 28 as the date for polls.

In a fresh application, the State government sought more time for the exercise on the pretext of carrying out delimitation of wards as per the 2011 census. However, the court nixed the plea for delimitation of wards saying that the State government cannot retract from the assurance given on May 5.
