Burdened by debt, 2 farmers commit suicide

They had borrowed to grow crops and for daughter's marriage

Unable to repay mounting debts, a 55-year-old farmer committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree at his farm near Adagooru village in the taluk on Sunday morning.
The deceased farmer has been identified as Srinivas, a resident of Adagooru village.

It is learnt, the farmer had supplied 130 tonnes of sugar cane to IPL sugar factory. But the factory had not cleared dues of Rs 2 lakh. The farmer had taken crop loans and personal loans from the local moneylenders.

On Sunday morning, Srinivas went to his 5.9-acre farm and ended his life by hanging himself from a tree there. The body of Srinivas has been handed over to the relatives after conducting postmortem at Adagooru primary health centre (PHC). He is survived by wife and four daughters.

Hassan farmer ends life

In yet another incident reported from Hassan district, a 60-year-old debt-stressed farmer, who had consumed pesticide a four days back, failed to respond to treatment and died on Sunday at Adichunchanagiri Hospital at Bellur.

The victim Puttaswamy, a resident of Aruvanahalli under Shravanabelagola hobli, had availed loans to develop his farm and for his daughter’s marriage.

Not being able to repay the loans, he ended his life by consuming pesticide, Devamma, wife of Puttaswamy, stated in a complaint lodged with the jurisdictional police.
