Spurned by Delhi University administration, students on Monday approached Union Human Resource Minister Smriti Irani over “mass failure” in Sociology in varsity-affiliated colleges. Irani said she is already in talks with the DU administration.

“We have been protesting since Monday, but the Dean Students’ Welfare office didn’t do anything on this issue. Many of my classmates tried to reach Smriti Irani on Twitter,” Anubha Raturi, a third-year student of English (Hons) at Shivaji College said.

Over 400 students of DU colleges failed in Sociology and it has triggered protests by them. Students alleged error in evaluation of answer sheets.

From Shivaji College alone, 250 of 260 students from different courses flunked their Sociology test. Students from Laxmi Bai College, Janki Devi Memorial College and Keshav Mahavidyalya have also failed to clear the exam.

Responding to messages on Twitter, Smriti Irani told Raturi: “Have asked officers to enquire with DU.”

“Initially, we were assured that revised results will be provided to students, but the DU officials later made a U-turn. They asked us to file application for revaluation,” said Devyani Dua, another student from Shivaji College.

“Such a thing has not happened for the first time. Students failed before as well. This time, however, it has happened at a mass scale. Why would a student fail in Sociology, especially when you are asked about things like tribes and female foeticide,” she said.

DU Students’ Union Joint Secretary Ashutosh Mathur told Deccan Herald that students from different colleges have been complaining about the alleged irregularity in evaluation of answer sheets.

“We have asked the Dean Students’ Welfare to form a committee to find out where the fault lies. DUSU should also be part of the committee,” he said.

The students who approached the respective authorities in their colleges, were asked to apply for re-evaluation. DU on Monday held a meeting to resolve the issue.
