After few days of respite from the downpour, formation of a new depression area over the Bay of Bengal, under the influence of Southwest Monsoon, is expected to bring heavy rain in south India from Tuesday.

“The depression over north east Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of West Bengal is practically stationary and lay centred at 830 hours of today,” a senior met official told Deccan Herald on Monday evening.

According to him the system would be stationary for some time and it may concentrate into a deep depression during the next 24 hours. He said distant cautionary signal number one kept hoisted at Chennai, Ennore, Kattupalli, Cuddalore, Puducherry, Nagapattinam, Karaiakal, Pamban, Toothukudi, Kolachel and Rameswaram ports in Tamil Nadu.

Fishermen from Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka have been warned not to venture into sea as strong wind from  south-westerly  direction with speed of 45-55 kmph is likely to hit along and off north Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Puducherry  coasts.

According to the latest weather bulletin here, rain or thundershowers would occur at most places over entire Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and its neighbouring State in the next 24 hours.  Alangudi in Pudukkottai district of Tamil Nadu recorded a maximum of eight centimetre rain during the last 24 hours followed by Tiruvallur district, which registered six centimetre rain during the same period.

Life comes to a halt
The downpour, which crippled life in the state during last week, has brought copious inflows to various reservoirs and lakes in the state that supply drinking water.

Stanley Reservoir in Mettur, the lifeline of delta farmers, had received high inflow during last week, taking water over 90-feet mark against the previous year's figure of 85 feet.
Similarly water levels of other dams also increased during the same period.
