Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike has told various government departments, that function out of its premises, to clear the rent arrears soon to avoid legal action.

According to Palike officials, government departments including BSNL, railways, police and RTO among others are yet to pay the Palike Rs 18 crore as rent.

BBMP Administrator T M Vijaya Bhaskar and Commissioner Kumar Naik on Tuesday directed the Markets department officers to seal the shops/offices if the tenants do not pay the rent immediately.

Some of the depts that have not paid the rent includes Cauvery Handlooms, Cauvery Handicraft Society,  Karnataka State Coir Corporation Limited and Priyadarshini Handlooms among others.  While the Karnataka Fisheries department, which is functioning from a premises in Yeshwantpur, has to pay Rs 1.38 lakh, Railway dept, which is operating from Public Utility Building has to pay Rs 1.08 crore to the civic agency.

The commissioner said that despite repeated notices issued to the departments, there has been no response. “The Market department will issue a final notice now. There are 6,000 shops functioning from premises owned by the Palike and every month the officials concerned should issue a notice to the shop owners asking them to clear the due. The copies of the notices should be handed over to the deputy commissioner (Markets). The officers should not be negligent in issuing notices,” Naik added.
