The Memon family is deeply disturbed after the Supreme Court dismissed Yakub’s petition. The family is based in Mahim in the western suburbs of Mumbai. Over the past fortnight, those who had met Yakub in Nagpur Central Prison, include his cousin and a family aide Usman Memon, his wife Rahin Memon and 21-year-old daughter Zubeda.

On Wednesday, his elder brother, Suleiman Memon, visited him in the jail. However, the details of the meeting is not yet clear.

“We have full faith in the judiciary. We have full faith in the Almighty. Please leave me alone,” Suleiman said.

Over the last weekend, Rahin and Zubeda had requested President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Maharashtra Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, to pardon Memon and commute the death sentence to life sentence.

The last case of a hanging in Maharashtra was of Ajmal Kasab, a Pakistani national, in November 21, 2012, for the 26/11 terror attacks on Mumbai.
