A 25-year-old woman and her lover killed her husband when he learnt about their affair in Delhi Cantonment area last month. Sumitra and Arjun were arrested after Babu Lal was found dead with injury marks on his neck on June 20, police said on Wednesday.

Babu Lal and Sumitra lived at a rented house in Old Nangal.

“Babu Lal was strangled by Sumitra and Arjun while he was drunk and was left indefensible. After confirming his death, the body was dumped on the road,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West) R A Sanjeev.

On being questioned, Sumitra told police that apart from her family, a relative was also staying in the house for the last one year.

The ‘relative’ is 26-year-old Arjun, who hails from Odisha’s Sundergarh district. The investigating officers, however, found that Sumitra’s statement was not satisfactory.
On suspicion, Sumitra was thoroughly interrogated after which she confessed to have killed Babu Lal with Arjun.

“Sumitra was arrested on June 25, while a team nabbed Arjun in Odisha’s Sundergarh district on June 27,” Sanjeev added.

Sumitra told police that she came to Delhi from Odisha in search of work and married Babu Lal in 2009.

Before marriage, she was in a relationship with Arjun. Arjun also came to Delhi last year and was staying in the couple’s house claiming to be Sumitra’s relative.
“Arjun used to frequently visit Sumitra in her room in the absence of her husband,” Sanjeev said.

Babu Lal was furious when he came to know about the relationship, and forced Arjun to leave the house. Finding no alternative, Sumitra and Arjun decided to eliminate Babu Lal.
Arjun told police that he came to the capital in search of work and developed intimacy with Sumitra during his stay in the house.

“As per plan, Babu Lal and Sumitra consumed alcohol together late on June 19. Babu Lal got heavily drunk and passed out after which Sumitra and Arjun strangled him,” Sanjeev added.

Babu Lal could barely fight back as the liquor had left him indefensible. A case of murder has been filed with Delhi Cantonment police station.
