Pak violates ceasefire again, targets Jammu region

Last Updated 18 June 2014, 18:47 IST

In yet another ceasefire violation, Pakistani troops targeted Indian posts on Tuesday along the International Border (IB) in Jammu region, drawing retaliation from Indian guards.

There was no death, injury or damage to anyone on the Indian side in the exchange of fire, a spokesperson of Border Security Forces (BSF) said.

He said Pakistan Rangers resorted to unprovoked firing in Suchetgarh sector in Samba district on Tuesday afternoon. “Pakistani troops resorted to firing from automatic and small arms on Indian posts along the border around noon and it continued for 15 minutes,” the spokesperson said.

Pakistan has been violating the 2003-ceasefire agreement and in the last few weeks more than a dozen incidents have reported on Line of Control (LoC) and International Border in Jammu and Kashmir.

While the Army guards the LoC that divides Jammu and Kashmir between India and Pakistan, the BSF is posted along the International Border.

Last year, 12 Indian troopers were killed and 41 injured in the highest number of ceasefire violations (149) and firing by Pakistani troops on forwards post, civilian areas and patrolling parties along the Indo-Pak border.

Army maintains the ceasefire violations and firing by Pakistan were aimed to help militants infiltrate into Jammu and Kashmir from across the border from the “launching pads” along LoC where they are waiting to crossover.
