A female schoolteacher is suspected to have committed suicide in Attibele near here on Monday, hours after her spurned lover threatened to abduct and forcibly marry her.

Gayathri, 21, who was working as a guest lecturer at a local government school, reportedly hanged herself from the ceiling fan when her mother went to bathroom at their home in Attibele. Her father, Muni Kaverappa, wasn’t home at the time. The family hails from Muthanallur, a village near Bengaluru.

The Attibele police said Gayathri was disturbed about Ranjith’s advances. Ranjith, also from Muthanallur, often stalked her. On Monday too, he followed her when she was returning from school and proposed to her. But when she didn’t reciprocate, he reportedly threatened to abduct and forcibly marry her.

The police suspect that Gayathri was “deeply disturbed” about what Ranjith would do to her. Utter despair drove her to take the extreme step. Muni Kaverappa, in a complaint to the police, blamed Ranjith’s advances for Gayathri’s suicide and demanded action against him. The police have booked Ranjith for abetting the suicide under Section 306 of the IPC and are hunting for him.

Cop killed in accident

A constable riding home was killed when his bike rear-ended a truck that had stopped abruptly on the Adakamaranahalli flyover on Tumakuru Road in northern Bengaluru around 10 pm on Monday, the police said.

Janardhan, 27, who was posted at the Mahalakshmi Layout police station, couldn’t control his bike when a truck moving ahead stopped abruptly. As the bike crashed into the heavy vehicle, Janardhan was tossed up in the air. He then fell on the ground, suffering serious injuries.

He was rushed to a government hospital in Nelamangala and then shifted to a private hospital. But he failed to respond to treatment and died around 2 am, said the police. The Madanayakanahalli police seized the truck and are hunting for the driver who managed to escape.

Janardhan, a native of Niduvanda village in Bengaluru Rural district, was living in Nelamangala with his wife who is three months pregnant. The couple had married eight months ago.

He had joined the police force in 2009 and had earlier worked at the Seshadripuram police station.
