The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a plea by sacked Gujarat IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt for action against the then Gujarat Home minister and BJP president Amit Shah and RSS ideologue S Gurumurthy for reportedly influencing probe into 2002 riots and encounter cases.

A bench of Chief Justice H L Dattu and Justice Arun Mishra also rejected his plea for SIT probe into two FIRs registered against him, saying his overall conduct of being in touch with a political party, NGOs, including Narmada Bachao Andolan and media persons to affect investigations into 2002 riots and encounter cases was not above board. The court said he had “probably forgotten that he was senior IPS Officer, his conduct indicates that he was not acting bona fide and was catering to the interest elsewhere”.

Bhatt faced two cases, one relating to coercing police constable K D Panth to give a false affidavit before the SIT in 2011 probing riots cases and for hacking email account of Additional Advocate General Tushar Mehta.
