The dance of the universe

Last Updated 24 November 2015, 18:25 IST
A dance performance inspired by science from the Swiss Academy Award-winning choreographer Gilles Jobin, will be presented on November 26 and 27, 7 pm onwards at Chowdiah Memorial Hall.

‘Quantum’ is a quivering, throbbing performance that celebrates the dance of the universe through the movement of elementary particles. This is a magnetic show, both literally and figuratively, where six dancers constantly attract and repel each other, as if caught in a force field, which all matter is subjected to. The performance will see fascinatingly fluid diagonals, paths that cross, light touches, all executed with perfect control as the dancers follow their own trajectory with its varying geometry.

This captivating show based on random trajectories showcases extremely precise movements. The rumblings of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), captured by the composer Carla Scaletti and the lumino-kinetic installation of the German artist, Julius von Bismarck, accompany the dancers and reinforce the feeling of being thrust into the very heart of life.

Gilles Jobin says he does not want to surf the wave, but  create it. Passionately interested in research and innovation, ‘Quantum’ for him, is another aspect of the wave, endlessly reproduced, that continuously ruffles the depths of the universe. Four lamps hang on long cords from the ceiling and are installed in a row. They are propelled in swinging, circular motions by motors. The radius of these circles varies for each lamp, which causes the lamps to sometimes appear as if they were moving synchronously. The installation is capable of replicating complex models of mathematical interference, which have been choreographed and programmed by the artiste.
