Two girls reportedly committed suicide by hanging themselves at their home when nobody was around, the police said.

The girls — Sumitra, 18, a first PU student, and her neighbour Harita, 17 — are suspected to have ended their lives around 2.30 pm on Sunday. The incident came to light when Sumitra’s mother Savitri returned home. She knocked on the door but didn’t get a response. She peeped through the window and found the two girls hanging from the ceiling fan.

She screamed to neighbours for help. The door was broken open and the bodies were brought down. The jurisdictional Avalahalli police also arrived soon. The bodies were sent for post-mortem.

Sumitra and Harita were friends and neighbours. The police said they didn’t find any suicide letter and that they were investigating what drove the girls to suicide.

Boy drowns in lake

A 17-year-old boy drowned in a lake in Vittasandra near Electronics City, south Bengaluru, on Sunday. Lakshmi Varma of Chikkathogur had gone to the lake along with his five friends for swimming. He ventured deep into the water and was washed away.

His friends, who were not expert swimmers, ran to alert the local people. By the time help arrived, Varma had drowned, police said. Fire personnel fished out the body after an hour-long operation.
