Great heights

International hockey player S K Uthappa, a native of Coorg, is one of the star players of the Indian hockey team. Uthappa has about 90 international caps and has played numerous international tournaments including the London Olympics in 2012. In an interview with Sagarika Devika Bopanna, he talks about his journey, his interests and inspiration.  

Why did you take up hockey as a profession?

I picked up the basics of hockey when I used to watch my brother Chinappa S K play during school days. I was more interested in badminton than hockey back then. There came a point where I had to pick one sport. I chose hockey since it runs in my blood.

What have been the highlights of your career?

I have played various tournaments for the country. Among them, the notable ones are the London Olympics 2012, World Cup 2014, Champions Trophy 2012 and 2014, Asia Cup 2013, Azlan Shah Cup 2012-16 and World League Final Round 2014.

Have you faced hardships to get where you are today?

I would be lying if I said it was easy; there were definitely several difficulties and challenges along the way. My childhood away from parents, hostel life and the injuries that I received while playing have all left a mark on me and made me the person that I am today.

Who do you look up to as a sportsperson?

Roger Federer, as he is extremely good at what he does. I admire his perfectionism and his ability to cope with pressure. Moreover, the charity work he does speaks a lot about how kind-hearted he is.

Who is your inspiration?

My inspiration is not any person; it is the game that I love which makes me try harder each time and perform better everyday.

What does family mean to you?

My family means the world to me! My parents are the reason for my success, I am nothing without them.

Who are your favourite movie stars?

Zach Galifianakis, because he is too funny and I always have a good time watching his movies. Kangana Ranaut is another star I like, purely because of her talent and abilities.

Your favourite musician...

I love listening to music, especially the classics. Currently, my favourite is ‘Coldplay’.

And your ultimate holiday destination?

Fiji Islands, as I love being surrounded by water. I have travelled a lot for the sport, but have never had time for a real vacation as such.

Which cuisine do you relish the most?

Coorgi cuisine prepared by my mother.

What do you indulge in during your leisure time?

I eat, sleep and indulge in gaming. I love gaming and I believe that I am a FIFA legend.

What is your philosophy in life?

‘Never let success get to your head, never let failure get to your heart’. We always face ups and downs in life; the real challenge is to not let them defeat you.
