The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will open the tenders for biomining at Mandur landfill on Wednesday, according to the Palike’s Joint Commissioner (health and solid waste management) Sarfaraz Khan.

The BBMP has had many meetings with companies, who have interest in biomining. As many as eight companies have shown interest in compost and metals recovery.
The demand is high for compost as it can be used as manure and to generate electricity. There is also high demand for metals for recycling.

High-quality wet waste
The dump at Mandur has around 10 lakh tonnes of waste and 15% of it is high-quality wet waste. There is also wood, plastic and metals which will be excavated during biomining.

Mandur landfill site is spread across 130 acres. After the area is cleared, the BBMP wants to use it for various purposes like plantations, housing and commercialisation.

Though dumping of waste at the landfill had stopped over a year ago, locals continued to suffer because of the stench. On the suggestions of solid waste management experts, it was decided to clear the dump through biomining.

Last year the BBMP suggested the same to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and got his approval. But the file was stuck in the BBMP due to reported pressure from the garbage mafia.
It again gained momentum after the chief minister reassured locals of clearing the dump. Another survey was done by the expert committee which said biomining was the best solution to clear the dump.
