From being an emcee to leading one of the largest beatboxing ensemble (a form of vocal percussion, often mimicking drums) of 1,246 participants, which became a part of the Guinness World Records, Vineeth Vincent has come a long way. The 27-year-old now runs an artist management company called SideStep, a small jam studio called Musical Cubicle, and a hostel for backpackers and creative people besides, performing several live gigs. In a candid conversation with Metrolife, at the sidelines of the launch of Delhi showroom for New Audi R8 V10 Plus, he shares what keeps him ticking.

When did you realise that you had a potential to beatbox?

I used to be an emcee earlier on in my career, way back in 2007. I used to show up early for sound checks and fool around with the microphone and one thing led to another. Before I knew it, I was making beatboxing sounds.

What inspired you to form the World Record ensemble?
I watched British beatboxer Sholmo set the record for leading the largest ensemble and was inspired.

Has beatboxing picked up in India?
It has been picking up since 2008, the year I built a stable career. I know of another beatboxer named Alan De Souza who does this on a regular basis with his band called Raaga Trippin. There are a few other beatboxers in the country who make some decent money with this art. It’s all about finding the right combination.

What are the challenges you face?
The first challenge is that fellow beatboxers damage the budding market by doing shows for free. Secondly, clients who bargain down the cost of performance. Then, having a sub standard sound equipment and then expectating a mind blowing gig. And lastly, the event managers and clients who avoid paying.

What was unique about your recent live gig?
The New Audi R8 V10 Plus launch was one power packed performance. It was the first time I had a good show with a drummer. I guess a lot of that credit goes to Kishan Balaji from Galeej Gurus. It takes a lot of mature drumming and skill to be able to pull something like the perfect synchronisation of the beats of his drum with my sounds.
