The Department of Public Instruction on Monday clarified that parents of children admitted under Right to Education (RTE) quota will have to buy the uniforms and books themselves.

Following the launch of the second round of draw of lots for RTE seats, Principal Secretary to the Department of Public Instruction, Ajay Seth said that under the RTE Act, there was provision only for free education.

“Parents will  have to purchase the uniforms and books themselves,” he added.

Parents, however, must not be forced to purchase books and uniforms from the school itself.

Seth said that the parents should be given a list of material they ought to purchase and it could be bought from a place of their choice.

This year, as many as 2,74,628 candidates had applied for a seat under the RTE quota.

Out of this, 95,656 applications were rejected on several grounds such as wrong
address.

Even as the schools have already started classes, 84,180 eligible for second round of admission under the RTE quota still await a seat.

Total seats available in the first round were 1,78,972 out of which 1,01,345 were allotted. As many as 78,546 of these students secured admission in the first round.
