Blaming the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) for the 'faulty' tender conditions regarding municipal solid waste disposal, opposition BJP corporators said the city is sitting on piles of garbage in absence of proper waste disposal mechanism.

It all started with Govindaraj Nagar corporator Umesh Shetty accusing the BBMP of not clearing garbage for the past fortnight. Soon, he received support from Maruthi Mandir ward corporator N Shanthakumari who too made the same accusation.

The debate suddenly got a twist and Special Commissioner (Solid Waste Management) Subodh Yadav found himself at the receiving end for the 'unscientific' tender conditions.

Opposition leader Padmanabha Reddy said no contractor came forward to bid for the SWM contract despite floating tenders 12 times.  Joining the issue, Basavanagudi corporator B S Sathyanarayana criticised the experiments of setting up the cooperative society of the civic workers.

He said, “You want to negate the presence of corporators by floating cooperative societies of civic workers. We will not agree as this is not going to solve the problem. It is we who work at the grassroots level everyday whereas officers like Subodh Yadav never come out of their comfort zones.”

Quickly, Mayor B N Manjunath Reddy came to Yadav’s defense and said, “Such accusations are uncalled for when I have seen him starting his day as early as 5 am in the morning and toiling till late in the night.”

Later, Yadav explained that the mixed waste has caused a lot of problem. “The segregated waste is added to the mixed waste, which defeats the purpose of segregation of waste at source,” Yadav said.
