Ajmer, which did not feature in the list of top 20 cities for the Smart Cities project, is trying to make it to the second list.

A reworked proposal in this regard will be submitted to the Centre before June 30. Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje is doing her bit to ensure the city makes it this time by introducing people-friendly measures, including sanitary napkin vending machines in public places.

Officials said Ajmer is the first city in Rajasthan to have vending machines for sanitary napkins. As many as 70 machines will be installed at parks, jails, bus stands, colleges, schools and dispensaries, among others, to promote hygienic practices among women. "The scheme has been launched keeping in mind hygienic practices among girls and women. This is a 24-hour service. For Rs 10, they will get three pads. Incinerators are affixed with the machine to ensure proper disposal of the napkins,” Gaurav Goyal, Ajmer District Collector, told DH.

On Thursday, Vasundhara also launched the ‘toy bank’ scheme for underprivileged children. It aims to provide toys to anganwadis, primary schools and children’s wards at hospitals. Vasundhara, who has donated 101 toys, said clothes and books should also be distributed in the same manner.
