The saplings planted by the Forest Department at Karighatta hill in Srirangapatna taluk have a found a saviour in Ramesh, a native of nearby Chandagalu village. A few years ago, the Forest Department had planted saplings of wild tree varieties in the hill. Though the plants saw good growth during monsoon, they couldn’t survive harsh summer. Ramesh, who earns a living by selling mineral water, observed the condition of the plants and decided to water them during summer.

He cut old, 20-litre water cans into half and tied them to the plants using metal wires. A small hole was made at the bottom of each container to ensure continuous flow of water. The modified water container has a capacity of 10 litres. Ramesh collects water from River Lokapavani, which flows near the hill. He fills the containers once in 3 days. To make proper use of water he has planted medicinal plants like aloe vera, amruta balli and dodda patre that grow using the moisture at the plant base.  These water containers not only nourish the plants but also have become a source of water for birds.

For the last 10 years, this environment enthusiast has been engaged in one or the other conservation activity. During monsoon he sows seeds of wild tree species in the hills and forests of the region. Since Karighatta is a also tourist place, he has put boards on the roadside with awareness messages. The Forest Department officials appreciate his service, particularly informing them about forest fires. Ramesh can be contacted on 9900436066.
