Jaffee or Jaffe, a health drink made of jackfruit seeds, is the latest in a range of innovative jackfruit products that have hit the market recently. Two efforts — one in Chikkamagaluru and one in Mangaluru — have been successful in drawing the attention of consumers to this new product, which is also called as jackfruit seed coffee. The product is the brainchild of Shivanna, an entrepreneur in Sakharayapatna in Chikkamagaluru district, who has been producing Jaffee as a part of his home-based food industry Ankura, for the last four months.

Maitreyi Shenoy, a young entrepreneur from Mangaluru, drew inspiration from his effort and developed a similar product called Jaffe.

Jackfruit seed coffee, which is a light brown coloured powder, is made out of roasted jackfruit seeds. If stored in air-tight container, it can be stored for six months. The product doesn’t contain caffeine. The mode of preparation is the same as that of  filter coffee.

Though both the products are similar in nature, the methods of preparation are slightly different. Shivanna opined that one can hardly differentiate between the regular coffee and Jaffee. Maitreyi feels that Jaffe can be a substitute for coffee or tea. It contains natural sugar content and hence, needs no added sugar. Moreover, jackfruit seed is rich in protein, she said.
