One of the most popular deities in the Hindu pantheon is named Hanuman. Hanuman is depicted as a man with a monkey face, and is one of the chief characters in the epic story - the Ramayana.

Hanuman plays a pivotal role in Sampoorna Sundarkand of Ram Charit Manas by Tulsidas. Chanting this every day, with uncompromising devotion towards Lord Hanuman, brings health, wealth, and prosperity . Hanuman is known by many names, -- Pavan Putra, Anjaneya, Vayu Putra, Veer Hanuman and the like, each one with a strong mythological base.

Vanara in Hindu Philosophy means 'sub-human' or 'of animal-form' and hence the Vanaras of the earlier centuries had monkey-faces. Anjana was one such Vanara woman who was facing her past Karma, in the wilderness. Unable to bear a child, she was blessed with abundant spiritual powers. Impressed by her Bhakti (devotion) and spiritual prowess, Lord Vayu blessed her with a son, the monkey-God , Hanuman.

Hindus believe, that Hanuman alone can alleviate the evil designs of 'Lord Shaneeswara' who is feared by all. Hanuman symbolizes muscle-power, and courage. Hanuman, despite all his powers, chose to remain the humble, obedient servant of Lord Rama, and took absolutely no credit for anything that he did for the benefit of mankind. A perfect example of 'green room boy'! can we not emulate Hanuman in our thoughts and actions and claim no credit for any of them?

Swami Sivananda's quote sums up Hanuman's personality traits so well. "He had Bhakti, Sakti, Vidya and Seva-Bhava, Brahmacharya and Nishkamya-Bhava. He never boasted of his bravery and intelligence. He said to Ravana, "I am a humble messenger of Sri Rama. I have come here to serve Rama, to do His work. By the command of Lord Rama, I have come here. I am fearless, by the grace of Lord Rama. I am not afraid of death. I welcome it, if it comes while I am serving Lord Rama." Mark here how humble Hanuman was. He never said, "I am brave Hanuman. I can do anything and everything."
