The scheme which provides insurance for 92 paisa for train passengers has received good response.
In a fortnight, more than 50 lakh passengers have opted for it. The scheme came into operation on September 1, 2016.
A senior official of the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) told DH that per day, 3 lakh passengers opt for the insurance.
The travel insurance of up to Rs 10 lakh is available to passengers who book e-ticket on its website. The premium for the insurance is 92 paisa per passenger. There are three insurance companies which are partnering in the scheme — ICICI Lombard, General Insurance and Royal Sundaram. The railways and IRCTC will charge 7% each for every premium. The rest will go to the insurance companies. The insurance cover is uniform for all classes and the option available through a checkbox at the time of e-ticket booking Except for passengers of suburban trains, the facility is available to all passengers irrespective of the class of ticket.
