If you are dealing with red, watery or itchy eyes and frequent headaches, you are not alone. Due to constant exposure to digital devices, a large number of people are experiencing increased eye fatigue that leads to such symptoms.

This is compounded by the fact that we often use multiple devices simultaneously. While we can’t avoid using them, here are some tips to help reduce the strain on the eyes:

Take frequent breaks from your computer: While it may not be possible to reduce the usage of computers, take frequent breaks in between to rest your eyes. You can consider scheduling meetings or brainstorming sessions in the meantime. You could also just stand up from your desk every hour and look away from the computer for a few minutes.

Minimise glare: Excessive glare on your monitor adds to the eye strain. Try to reduce reflections in your surroundings by using window blinds, avoiding bright light sources in your room and installing glare filters on your monitor. The lesser the glare on the screen, the lesser the strain on your eyes.

Reduce social media use: While a bulk of our digital exposure is work-related, a major part of it is also due to the constant use of social media. By restricting your time on Facebook, you can reduce almost an hour of unnecessary strain every day.

Use protective eyewear: Use spectacles that are customised for your eyes. These offer protection from harmful blue light (which is a high-frequency, high-energy light), strain and fatigue.

Never carry your smartphone to bed: This not only increases the digital strain on the eye but also wrecks your sleep. Make sure you put your phone away at least half an hour before going to bed.
