Bill to alter names of cities, towns in legislations tabled

The state government on Wednesday tabled five bills in the Legislative Assembly, including one to incorporate the altered name of Bangalore and 11 others cities in various legislations.

The revenue department had altered the names of 12 cities of Karnataka and a no-objection from the Union government for this alteration was obtained in 2014.

However, names of the cities remained unaltered in various laws in force in the state. The Karnataka Alteration of Names of Certain Places Bill, 2016 proposes to replace the old names with the altered one in all legislations.

The cities whose names were altered are Bangalore to Bengaluru, Mangalore to Mangaluru, Bellary to Ballari, Bijapur to Vijayapura,  Belgaum to Belagavi, Chikmagalur to Chikkamagaluru, Gulbarga to Kalaburagi, Mysore to Mysuru, Hospet to Hosapete, Shimoga to Shivamogga, Hubli to Hubballi and Tumkur to Tumakuru.

The Karnataka  Ayurvedic, Naturopathy, Siddha, Unani and Yoga Practitioners Registration and Medical Practitioners Miscellaneous Provisions (Amendment) Bill, 2016 proposes to provide for the provisional registration of Ayush practitioners.

Renaming varsity
The Karnataka State Universities (Amendment) Bill,  2016 proposes to rename the “Karnataka State Women’s University” as “Karnataka State Akkamahadevi Women University” in honour of 12th century Kannada saint poet Akkamahadevi.

The Karnataka State Civil Services (Regulation of Transfer and Postings of Forest Officers and Other Officials) Bill, 2016 is aimed at regulating transfer and posting of Deputy Range Forest Officers, Forest Guards and Forest Watchers of the Forest Department.
