City Municipal Council works for a garbage-free Madikeri

Last Updated 05 December 2016, 18:22 IST

The City Municipal Council has decided to make Madikeri town, which ranks 11th in cleanliness in the country, free of the garbage menace. The authorities have planned to impose fines on those who dump garbage beside the roads.

In the first phase, all the containers placed in different layouts in town was cleared. Now, 10 tractors visit houses to collect the garbage. Also, the City Municipality will purchase tippers to collect the waste. The vehicles will visit the layouts at designated time to collect garbage.

As Madikeri is near a hilly region, the tippers and tractors cannot move to some localities – therefore, containers will be placed at such localities. Tippers will visit the localities at Stone Hill, Chamundeshwari Nagara and Putani Nagara from next month. A CMC official said that the state government directed them three years ago to free the town of containers. “The CMC will ensure the effective collection of garbage from households.

“Those who dump waste as per their wishes will have to pay Rs 100 as fine. If, on the other hand, commercial establishments dump waste similarly, they will have to pay a fine of Rs 500,” the official warned.
