The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will act tough against the misuse of residential buildings for commercial activities. In a public notice issued on Wednesday, BBMP Commissioner N Manjunatha Prasad said such violations cause obstruction for free flow of traffic, nuisance and disturbance to public peace and also problems to dwellers in residential areas.

“Palike is constrained to take steps in closing unauthorised / illegal commercial activities being run in residential areas,” Prasad said in the notice. He stated, “Obtaining sanctioned plan for residential building, but running commercial activities, opening of shops in parking areas, basement, ground floor, mezzanine floor in residential building is a violation. It violates the zoning regulation, guidelines issued under the notification issued by the Urban Development Department on March 20, 2015, provisions of the KMC Act, Revised Master Plan-2015 and the Karnataka High Court order(sic).’’

Prasad warned the violators to close down their shops and commercial establishments in residential building voluntarily within seven days. Else, Palike would act tough against them and close them forcibly. Palike sources said hefty penalty will also be imposed if the Palike closes them from the date of commencement certificate issued for the construction of the building.
