The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Friday adjourned the hearing on the contentious steel flyover project to December 20.

The Tribunal also refused to vacate the injunction order, stalling any work on the flyover from Basaveshwara Circle to Hebbal till its next orders.

The NGT, Southern Bench, Chennai heard the objections filed by the petitioners Citizens Action Forum (CAF) and former additional chief secretary to Karnataka government V Balasubramaiam.

Petitioners submitted before the Tribunal that the project will lead to environmental destruction and, it needed environmental clearance.

They pointed that the contentions of the respondents, the state government and Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) were vague and does not hold ground. They also submitted that the cost of the project was too high for a steel flyover, which will not serve any purpose as traffic jams will resurface in just two years of its construction.

The state government and BDA sought time to file their objections, following which the bench adjourned the hearing to December 20.

According to N Mukund, President of CAF, the BDA and the state government appealed that the injunction be vacated. But the Tribunal refused to vacate the injunction.
