External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Saturday underwent a kidney transplant at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here.

The organ was harvested from a living unrelated donor whose identity was not revealed in keeping with medical ethics.

The nearly five-hour surgery was conducted by a team of doctors, including AIIMS Director M C Mishra, surgeons V K Bansal, V Seenu and nephrologist Sandeep Mahajan.

“The transplant surgery was successful and I think Sushma Swarajji should be discharged in a week or so,” said Dr Mishra.

Sushma (64) underwent the surgery at the cardiothoracic neurosciences centre at the AIIMS. According to sources, the donor was wheeled into the operation theatre at 9 am and Sushma was taken in at 11.30 am.

The procedure went on till around 3 pm. “Both are being monitored for any eventuality,” the doctors said.

Sushma was admitted to AIIMS on November 7 and had been undergoing dialysis thrice a week since then.

She tweeted about her health on November 16. “I am in AIIMS because of kidney failure. Presently, I am on dialysis. I am undergoing tests for a kidney transplant. Lord Krishna will bless,” she had tweeted.

“She has been suffering from diabetes for quite a long time. After the diagnosis of kidney failure, she was put on maintenance dialysis,” said a doctor.

After Sushma went public with her health condition, many people had offered their kidneys for transplant. Sushma’s daughter was turned down by the doctors as a potential donor as she was also a diabetic and suffering from obesity.
