Thousands of Muslims took part in colourful processions as part of Eid-e-Milad, the festival to mark the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad, in the city on Tuesday.

The mass procession, organised by All Karnataka Meelad-o-Juloos-e-Rahmatul Lil Alameen Committee, started in Yelahanka, and passed through Hegdenagar, Tannery Road and Shivajinagar before converging at the YMCA ground on Nrupathunga Road in the evening.

Attractive replicas and miniature models of the Grand Mosques of Makkah and Madinah, the crescent moon and stars formed the tableaux during the procession.

As the procession moved, participants raised slogans eulogising Prophet Muhammad, recited verses of the Qur’an,  and sang Na’at (poems in praise of the Prophet). Youths enthusiastically waved the green crescent flags.

Mosques such as City Jamia Masjid in KR Market drew large congregations. Speaking  on the occasion, committee chairman Syed Vahidul Rehman said, “Maintaining peace in society is one of the main objectives of Islam. Let us all pledge to promote communal harmony,” he said.

Maulana Syed Bilal Shah Hashmi hoisted the flag at Ashur Khana-e-Bibi Zainabiya near Hazrat Bilal Masjid, Tannery Road, where more than 100 Muslim organisations took part. The procession then headed towards Madina Masjid ground, Sultanji Gunta Road, near Bamboo Bazaar, Shivajinagar.

Some mosques were decorated with colourful lights. Others had special counters to feed the faithfuls. As the traffic police had announced traffic curbs, there was not much congestion.
