New, improved push carts for pourakarmikas launched

Last Updated 28 January 2017, 20:05 IST
Seeing the plight of pourakarmikas struggling with their damaged push carts, members of BM Kaval Residents Welfare Association with the help of a corporate house, have come up with scientifically designed push carts with special features. Members of the RWA and Titan Company Ltd representatives started working on the project two years ago.

After observational field-visits with pourakarmikas, designing and re-working on several prototypes of push carts over the last one year, they have now finally come up with an upgraded and light push cart. As many as 48 push carts have been produced so far, out of which, 41 will be put to use at BM Kaval Indiranagar 1st Stage, Indiranagar 2nd Stage and Defence Colony.

Sneha Nandihal, president of BM Kaval Indiranagar Ist Stage Residents’ Welfare Association said: “Pourakarmikas used to borrow money and sometimes use their own money to fix a broken wheel or handle. Garbage contractors never helped them. After seeing the pourakarmikas’ plight, we decided to help them.” Improvised pushcarts have separate space for water bottles, have four wheels instead of three and brakes, among others.

Manager, CSR, Titan Company Ltd, Ritika Gandhi said that around seven push carts out of 48 were in use during the Lalbagh flower show. She said each push cart costs less than Rs 10,000 and has better features. The push carts were formally launched on Saturday at BM Kaval Park.
