A buffet meal is usually a good option if one is dining out with a large group, especially if you want to save the hassle of having to ask everyone what they like and then end up spending too much.

While there are many places in the city that provide excellent buffet menus, ‘Chutney Chang’ in Jayanagar offers a large North Indian and Chinese spread at reasonable prices. It’s a casual place that one can head to with their family or friends for a relaxed long meal.

You can start by exploring the various live counters set up in the dining area of the restaurant which include ‘chaat’, dimsums and grilled items. The eatery also has a few special summer coolers available for the season.

The tangy ‘chaat’ items provide an interesting, rather appetising, start to the meal. If you’re fond of ‘chaats’, you may want to refill a few times. There’s ‘pani puri’, ‘dahi puri’, ‘bhelpuri’ and a few other items. The dimsums are the usual sorts, served with sauces to go with them.

The platter of starters is assorted and there’s quite a lot to satisfy both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. There are dishes like cutlets, ‘samosas’, ‘kebabs’, spring rolls, ‘paneer tikka’, ‘chicken tikka’ and manchurian to gorge on. All of that to accompany a piping hot bowl of soup, with veg and non-veg options.

While many people would be quite full with this selection already and would want to head straight to the dessert counter, there are some for whom the meal is incomplete without sampling the main course. Fret not! For they have a wide counter with veg and non-veg gravy dishes and dry items in ‘paneer’, mixed vegetables, chicken and mutton. For those fond of ‘biryani’, there’s that too. A few Chinese dishes are also a part of this section.

The salad counter, though big, is not too impressive.Leave some room for a mix of desserts which includes a variety of cakes, pastries, mousse and ice cream as well as traditional sweetmeats like ‘halwa’ and ‘gulab jamun’.

The place is not very posh and you would have had a better fare at other restaurants in the city, but it caters well to a large group that’s looking at a casual outing and variety more than anything else.

The restaurant is open from 12 pm to 3.30 pm for lunch and 7 pm to 11 pm for dinner. ‘Chutney Chang’ is located at Cosmopolitan Club, 22nd Cross, 3rd Block, Jayanagar. For details, call 49652780.
