Ensure Kashmiri students' safety: govt

Last Updated 21 April 2017, 19:26 IST
The Centre on Friday asked states to take strict action against those targeting Kashmiri students, following incidents of harassment reported from different parts of the country.

An advisory was issued on directions from Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who strongly condemned the incidents. The ministry of home affairs set-up a round-the-clock helpline in Delhi to deal with such issues. Kashmiri students and others residing away from their home state can email their grievances to dirmjk-mha@mha.nic.in or call 011-23092923 and 011-23092885.

‘They are like family’
“I have come to know that there were a few incidents of misbehaviour towards Kashmiris in some places. I appeal to all chief ministers to ensure security of Kashmiris in their states. I appeal to everyone to consider Kashmiri youths as their own brethren and treat them well,” Singh said.

“The contributions of the people of Kashmir in nation-building is immense. They are like any other Indian. They are part of the family,” he added.

The ministry communique urges states, Union Territories and the police to “take strict action to ensure the safety and security of students from Jammu and Kashmir”.

“Action as per the law needs to be taken against miscreants and safety of students from other states, including Jammu and Kashmir, needs to be fully ensured,” the advisory read.

The ministry said it has received reports of harassment of students from Jammu and Kashmir studying in institutions outside their home state, adding that similar advisories were issued in February, March and April last year. It has also asked the states to sensitise nodal officers appointed for addressing such complaints.

Sanjay Roy, a director in the ministry, has been designated as the nodal officer at the Centre.
