Young, talented and versatile music composer, Tanishk Bagchi made his Bollywood debut with ‘Banno’ from the movie ‘Tannu Weds Mannu Returns’.

Since then, he has charted out hits like ‘Tamma Tamma Again’ from ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’, ‘The Humma Song’ from ‘Ok Jaanu’, ‘Chatur Naar’ from ‘Machine’ and the romantic song ‘Bolna’ from ‘Kapoor & Sons’. His latest music composition is ‘Baarish’ from ‘Half Girlfriend’. He chats with Anila Kurian about his accomplishments in the field.

Did you always want to be a musician?

Not at all actually. I don’t have any musical background and it was never my passion. I didn’t even think this could be considered a profession.

So how did you come into the field?

I guess I met the right people at the right time and they helped me understand the purpose of music. I had to learn it from scratch and I’m glad I did.

How busy is your schedule right now?

Very busy! I have about 10 to 15 movies that I’m working on. It’s very challenging to unlearn and work on something new but that’s the only way to do it.

How do you separate yourself from one project to another?

There’s no strategy to this. You have to understand the work you’re supposed to do. For example, I could be having the best day of my life but if I am required to work on a sad song, I have to rewire my brain to understand the situation.

If not music, then...

Something to do with travelling or photography. If not that, something in the creative field. I don’t think I am meant to do a desk job.

Your favourite place...

I used to travel a lot with my dad growing up and we mostly went to the mountain areas of Kashmir, Bhutan and Nepal. I would love to go back there.

Your goal in the industry.

I might try my hand at directing or release my own album. But I think I prefer the behind-the-scene action better. I would also like bring back the pop music culture.
Your current favourite song.

‘Shape of You’ by Ed Sheeran.

The last song on your playlist.

‘Shape of You’  — I told you it’s my favourite!

If you could be part of a band, which one would it be?

‘Euphoria’ all the way.

Three random things about you.

I love snacks so I always have ‘bhujiya’ with me in the studio. I love to cook but I
am terrible at it. I am a shopaholic. You know what, I’m going to add one more
to the list — I love Buddha statues.
