An army officer’s wife who worked as a radio jockey with Radio Charminar here committed suicide following harassment for dowry by her husband and his family.

The incident occurred at the couple’s army residence in Bollarum a week ago, but came to light after the victim’s relative from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh came to Hyderabad and filed a complaint with the North Zone police.

Colleagues said Sandhya Singh (28) hung herself last Monday after returning from office in a state of depression. She successfully organised a Sufi Night for the FM radio on Sunday.

“Before leaving office she said she was fed up with her life,” said Abdul Samad, a member of Radio Charminar staff. Colleagues grew suspicious since she did not return to work on Tuesday.

The FM radio staff learnt about  Sandhya’s death only after her sister Ramya filed a complaint against Sandhya’s husband, Major Vishal Vaibhav of the 54th Infantry, for harassing and driving her to suicide.

Following the complaint, police booked the Major under Section 304B for dowry death.

Sandhya and Vishal got  married in 2015. Though Vishal did not take dowry, he began harassing her for it. The couple lived in the cantonment area and therefore it took five days for the police to learn about the case. When the police visited the couple’s home to question the Major, he got admitted in a Military hospital complaining of chest pain.

North Zone DCP Sumathi said that the army has assured that the accused will be handed over to the police after medical tests.
