Thirteen of a family, including four women and six children, died on Friday when their boat capsized in the Erratimma Raju Lake in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh.
Police said 19 people were in the boat at the time of the accident. So far, 13 bodies have been retrieved as rescue operations were hampered due to poor visibility.
Locals said Raju (20) and Sumithra (4) were saved by onlookers, who noticed the sinking boat.
The group of 19 people had come to a relative’s house to attend a function in a nearby village. They wanted to go on a boat ride in the nearby lake, and jumped into an old boat that was left behind by local fishermen. But neither did they check the boat’s durability nor did they hire an experienced boatman.
Meanwhile, one Chandrappa, who was helping out with the rescue operations, died of a heart attack.
