New Zealand cricketer Matt Henry, who is playing for Kings XI Punjab this season of IPL, says that the IPL is a good chance to hone one’s skills as well as to make some good friends.

Vouching for the fact that the IPL  format of cricket improves a player’s speed of thought and action, Matt  talks about why he thinks this game is here to stay, in an interview with Nina C George.

How does it feel to be back for another season of IPL?
As a team, we got off to a tough start this season, but it’s been an eventful, adventurous and exciting journey so far.

How do you define IPL?
It’s a great tournament. It has added another layer to cricket. There are a lot of young players who want to be a part of the tournament now.

Is going from one team to another a challenge?
It’s nice to play in different teams because each team offers an experience to cherish for a lifetime. For now, I am living every moment of this.

What if IPL is shifted out of India? Would it be as exciting?
India is a great place to play in — both in terms of cricket and spectators. The country also offers great opportunities for sightseeing.

What do you think is the biggest boost for IPL?
The crowd. Without their support, the format wouldn’t have come this far.

What do you do when you are not playing cricket?
I enjoy playing golf and hanging out with my friends.

How do you build speed, whether of thought or action, in cricket?
You have to work out regularly because maintaining good fitness levels helps develop speed when playing, and sharpens your thoughts as well.

How do you cope with pressure?
There are a few skills that you pick up and build on when playing cricket. I shrug off negativity and this approach has always helped me focus on applying what I have learnt.

How important is it for a player to develop his or her own style?
Developing your own style and doing things your way helps you build an identity for yourself.

Would you like to return to India as a tourist?
I’ve always wanted to visit India ever since I visited the Taj Mahal a while ago. I hope to return just to explore the place and its culture.
