The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) was slapped a fine of Rs 5 lakh for dumping construction waste in Mylasandra lake. Last week, the staff of the lake conservation authority had noticed construction waste unloaded in the lake. They suspected that the pieces of concrete pillars were from the Metro work. Karnataka Lake Conservation and Development Authority CEO (KLCDA) G Vidyasagar had then sent the sample to the forest officials.

On Tuesday, Deputy Conservator of Forests (Bengaluru Urban) Dipika Bajpai confirmed that the Forest Department has slapped a notice with a fine of Rs 5 lakh on BMRCL. “We have not received any response from them so far,” she said.

A BMRCL official said they will hold the contractor responsible for violating the rules. “We will recover the fine from the contractor. Our focus is on quality of work and timely completion of project. We expect our contractors to adhere to the rules. We don’t know how this happened. The BMRCL will slap a penalty on the contractor,” said BMRCL civil engineer Vijay Maurya. The Forest Department sent the notice to BMRCL following directions from (KLCDA). Bajpai said the BMRCL has one week to clear the waste from the lake land.
