Addressing the world

Last Updated 27 May 2017, 20:44 IST

How about a location identification system that helps you identify any house or property anywhere in the world? The system called 'what3word' promises to do exactly that in a very simple way.

Under this system, the entire world is divided into a grid of 3m x 3m squares. Each square is assigned a unique three word address. This means anyone can accurately find any location and share it more quickly, easily and with less ambiguity.

The service can be accessed through a free mobile app or an online map.  It could also be built into any other app, platform or website, with just a few lines of code.

The system is currently used in many parts of the world for navigation and mobility; automotive and transportation; deliveries, logistics and ecommerce; postal services; travel and tourism; national infrastructure and government; UAVs; humanitarian operations; emergency services; events; asset management and GIS.

During a natural disaster or humanitarian crisis, the system could be used to collect and disseminate crowd-sourced photos and reports. Data such as points of flooding, damaged buildings and hazardous electricity lines are automatically mapped.
