Bikes used for wheelies could be junked, warn cops

Last Updated 03 June 2017, 20:08 IST

Do wheelie stunts on the city’s roads and you could lose your vehicle forever, say Bangalore Traffic Police (BTP).

Taking serious note of the recent increase in incidents of reckless driving with riders, including minors, performing wheelies and other bike stunts on the city’s roads, the police have begun registering FIRs.

The police will seize the vehicle and produce the riders before the court. And that’s not all.

They will also bar the vehicle’s release since it is tampered with for doing wheelies, declare it unfit for use on roads and have it junked at the police station.

Earlier, the police used to let the rider off and release the vehicle after collecting a fine for reckless driving as per the Indian Motor Vehicles Act. “If found wheeling, you will lose your vehicle... maybe for ever. Don't do it ... please,” City Police Commissioner Praveen Sood tweeted on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the South East Division police roped in both the traffic and law and order police and conduced special drives and seized 13 two-wheelers on Friday night and early Saturday morning between 5.30 am and 7.45 am. The police found a few riders to be minors. Riders found doing wheelies, driving recklessly and endangering their own lives and those of others, were booked under IPC Section 279, which is more stringent than the MV Act.

The section says that “a person shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to six months, or with fine which may extend to one thousand rupees, or with both for rash and negligent driving endangering public lives.”

The city police have identified certain pockets, bylanes and stretches in the city where bike stunts are rampant. Bannerghatta Road, Dairy Circle, Jayadeva Hospital junction, a stretch of 38th Cross Jayanagar, NICE Road near PES College, Uttarahalli Main Road, RPC Layout, Dinnur Main Road, Kaval Byrasandra, Munireddy Palya, Nagawara-Thanisandra Road, HSR Layout and Mangammanapalya are some spots where wheelies are rampant.
