Nalini launches hunger strike in Vellore jail

Nalini Sriharan, who is a life convict in former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, launched hunger strike in Vellore prison demanding to shift her to Chennai jail to carry out various activities for her daughter's marriage.

At present, Nalini's daughter Harithra, who is living in United Kingdom, planning to visit Chennai after her marriage was fixed few months back.

Recently, Nalini submitted a petition to prison authorities seeking parole for six months to carry out works for her daughter's marriage.

With prison officials rejected her plea, Nalini informed the jail superintendent that she will stage hunger strike inside the prison at least seeking to shift her to Puzhal prison in Chennai to monitor the works related to her daughter's wedding.

Nalani's husband, who is also convicted in Rajiv Gandhi murder case, lodged in Vellore central prison.

In her 26 years of incarceration, Nalini got parole twice. In 2004, she had got parole to attend the marriage of her brother. In 2016, she got the second parole to attend the last rites of her father.

Nalini was sentenced to death by a trial court in the case on 28 January, 1998. However, her sentence was commuted to life term by the Tamil Nadu Governor on 24 April, 2000.

In 2015, Nalini had moved Madras High Court seeking a direction to Tamil Nadu government to consider her representation for premature release, saying she has undergone imprisonment for more than 24 years.
