There is a popular perception in the Kannada film fraternity that actor Kamna Jethmalani has given up working in Sandalwood since she is being seen in Telugu and Tamil projects more often. But Kamna says she had not signed anything in Kannada for want of good scripts. But now Kannada film ‘Garuda’ has offered her something different and the actor says that she’s more than happy to return to familiar territory.
Kamna, who is presently shooting in Mysuru, talks to Nina C George about why she has become more choosy.

What made you accept ‘Garuda’?
I play the role of a homemaker in ‘Garuda’. It is a simple, family-oriented subject and for a change I am going for a de-glam look. I am a family person and somehow this subject seems close to my heart.

How do you relate to your role?
I can relate to this role very well because it reflects who I am in real life. I am a very private person and my characterisation in ‘Garuda’ has gone down well with me.

On working with Srinagar Kitty in ‘Garuda’...
I haven’t interacted with Srinagar Kitty too much but he comes across as a thorough professional. He’s very humble and down to earth.

You have become more choosy about your films...
I’ve become a little choosy about work because I want to be comfortable with what I am doing. I was offered to play the lead in a few projects in Kannada but those weren’t as good as I thought they were so I didn’t take it up.

Why have you shifted from glamourous roles?
I have done a lot of glamourous role but now I want to bring about a change in my career. I’ve passed that stage where I get excited about only looking glamourous onscreen. I want to do more performance-oriented roles.

What next?
I am working on a yet-to-be titled Telugu project which is a heroine-oriented movie. I can’t reveal too much about my role because then I would literally be giving away the script. It’s a thriller-comedy film. There’s a neat balance between comedy and suspense.

What do you do when you are not acting?
I am a voracious reader. I’ve recently developed a fetish for badminton and play twice a week. I also make it a point to plan my travel and explore a new place every time I head out.

Are you open to working in more Kannada films?
I have a lot of offers from the Kannada film industry and I am open to working on  more challenging projects.
