The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike expects work on white-topping 24 roads in the city, which was approved by the government on Wednesday, to commence in a month.

While under TenderSURE roads, all utilities like BWSSB sewerage and water pipelines and Bescom cables are shifted, in the Rs 600-crore project announced on Wednesday, the shifting will be done only on some roads.

The Palike had planned white-topping of roads to make them more durable unlike asphalted roads, which require maintenance once in three years.

Survey of 24 roads

“As we planned white-topping the roads six months ago, we informed agencies like BWSSB and Bescom to shift their utilities. They conducted a survey on these 24 roads and planned to shift the utilities only in places where it was required,” said BBMP commissioner N Manjunath Prasad.

“The cost may appear quite high – almost 50% to 100% more than the black-topping of roads, but in the long run, these roads will be cost-effective as they will not require maintenance for at least 30-35 years,” said BBMP chief engineer K T Nagaraj.
