Last Updated 17 July 2017, 18:57 IST
The residents of Aiyappanagara in Kukkundur village in Karkala taluk staged a protest in front of the deputy commissioner’s office here, against the setting up of liquor shops in the village.

Forwarding a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Shashikala M, they charged that some politicians, using their influence, have set up the liquor shop in the residential area. Kukkunduru and Aiyappanagara villages, which are full of poor working as the daily wage workers, are completely  residential places. The opening of liquor outlets leads to illegal and anti-social activities in the vicinity. This is an opportunity created to support the chaos in the area. The permission issued to the liquor shops is unconstitutional, she charged.

The village will be the area for fights and peace will be affected, she maintained and urged the district administration to cancel the licence issued to the liquor shops. Families have children here and the ambience will be polluted, she added.

The liquor shop is near to schools, anganwadis, temple, Bhajana Mandir and bus stop and is slowly showing all signs of disturbances in the area. The public in the area strive to develop the village by organising various activities, including alcohol de-addiction camps. The villagers are totally against the liquor shop, she said and demanded that the district administration should immediately take measures to cancel the licence of the shops, she urged.
