In part two of the #SteelFlyoverBeda campaign, local residents will stage a protest at Shivananda Circle on Sunday to raise their voice against the upcoming steel bridge at the busy intersection in central Bengaluru.

The steel flyover is proposed to be 326 metres long and will connect commuters from Race Course Road towards Hare Krishna Road and the railway underpass in Sheshadripuram.

Residents say the project is “fraught with administrative and logistic problems which would defeat the purpose of constructing the flyover”.

They say that as the width of Hare Krishna Road between Jeevan building, adjoining Kumara Park, and the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce is hardly 65 feet, there will not be enough space to provide service roads on either side of the ramp.

Residents also believe the flyover will not help in decongestion and may instead lead to gridlock. “Downward movement of vehicles towards the narrow road leading to the under-bridge will lead to severe congestion,” the statement said.

Further, the steep rise of the ramp to the flyover will lead to gridlock and heavy vehicles will not be able to accelerate on it. The ecological balance of the area will be disturbed as the project would require felling 30 trees.

The protest will be supported by Citizens of Bengaluru (CfB), the group that successfully led the movement against the Rs 1,800-crore flyover that was to come up from Basaveshwara Circle to Hebbal.
