For Hardika Gulati, it was love at first sight for designing, in which she developed an interest during her college days itself. The more she learnt about it, the greater was her conviction that this was her calling.

Hardika started her label a year back. Even though she never wanted to start her brand, her passion pushed her to have a name of her own. In a conversation with Surupasree Sarmmah, the designer talks about her festive collection ‘Muted Royalty’, the challenges she faces as a designer and her admiration for Priyanka Chopra.

How did your interest in fashion designing develop?

I was a very dull student. During my second year, when every student is usually confused about what they want to do in life, I developed an interest in fashion. Soon enough, I understood that fashion is not just about the glam factor we see on the ramp. The soul of fashion is in the designs. And because of this realisation, I started learning the various nuances of this craft.

Why did you think of making royalty, usually perceived as elaborate and magnificent, muted?

My latest collection is for the rebellious brides who don’t want to wear typical outfits but want something bold with out-of-the-box designs. ‘Muted Royalty’ is all about going beyond the usual. I have been researching on different palaces that have different stories to tell. I am simply giving life to these stories through my collection.

Where did you gather your inspiration for the collection?

There are four forts in and around Udaipur and Gwalior that I have taken my inspiration from - ‘Lake palace’, ‘Umaid Bhavan’, ‘Jai Vilas Palace’ and ‘Lakshmi Vilas Palace’.

How would you describe your style of work?

Experimental and minimalistic.

A celebrity you would like to work with...

I admire Priyanka Chopra. She has a strong personality but at the same time shows her elegant side too. I love that about her.

Five must-haves in your travel bag...

Comfortable shoes, tank top, loose linen trousers, my reading glasses and a small pouch that will have all my essentials.

A designer you are inspired by...

Alexander McQueen.

As a newcomer, do you face any challenges in the competitive world of fashion?

Yes, a lot of them. As a new designer, it is difficult to come up if you are not known in the market. Having a name makes a lot of difference. However, I don’t feel any competition from the senior designers because they have already done their hard work and I don’t think I stand close to them. My competition is with myself.
