Inspiring women bask in glory

Last Updated 27 July 2017, 18:54 IST
“Times are changing so fast that may be 20-30 years from now, somebody may remark 'do men also play cricket!'” The remark from Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu captured the pervading sense of thrill and appreciation which the success of women cricketers in the World Cup has sparked in the country.

The inspirational show by the women cricketers shattered conventions, including a maddening clamour for their attention, during various felicitation ceremonies organized here. Since their return to the country on Wednesday, the cameras have clicked endlessly and conversations refused to be stalled.

In an exacting schedule, they were felicitated by Sports Minister Vijay Goel in the morning, followed by Board of Control for Cricket in India and by the Railways during the afternoon. The contribution of Railways has been immense during the journey of women cricketers with 10 of them being employed by them.

The Railway minister, who confessed he felt like a “proud father” on the success of these cricketers, even came out with new policy for them. He also announced a cash award of Rs 13 lakh for each of the 10 women cricketers with Railways.

“We have 150 women cricketers. Their career in Railways is always safeguarded. Diana Edulji has been a pioneer for us. I have taken a policy decision that will allow you to be on all-time leave so that you can focus on the game,” Prabhu said.

The minister acknowledged their success had initiated a wind of change in the Indian cricket.

“Cricket was earlier identified with only men. This is a definite sign of changing times not just for women's cricket but it also gives a new sense of confidence to all women in India. We are used to celebrating achievements by the men but our women have shown they can play better cricket than men,” Prabhu said.

“You didn't win the Cup but you did win hearts. Please be aware, people will watch more and more, women's cricket.”

Goel assured the cricketers the ministry’s doors were open “24x7 for players and best facilities will be provided to them.”

The BCCI presented the cricketers with a cheque of Rs 50 lakh each and support staff with Rs 25 lakh each.
