SC notice to BCCI, CoA on Swamy's plea for e-auction of media rights in IPL

The Supreme Court on Friday sought the response from the BCCI and Committee of Administrators on a plea made by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy for e-auctioning of the media rights of cash-rich T-20 Indian Premier League.

A bench of Justices Dipak Misra and A M Khanwilkar issued the notice to the cricket board and the CoA, despite opposition from senior advocate A M Singhvi on behalf of BCCI CEO.

"We are just issuing notice and not passing any interim order at the moment," the bench said, putting the matter for consideration August 22.

Singhvi contended the apex court should not interfere into the matter as the process has already been initiated with more than 20 bidders participating in it.

The court, however, brushed aside the objection as Swamy contended the matter involving the award of media rights to the tune of RS 30,000 crore should not be decided in an opaque manner.

In his PIL, the BJP leader has cited court verdicts to buttress his point that it has been held that auctioning is the best method of awarding contracts.
