Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) has finally agreed to provide financial assistance for the fifth phase of the drinking water project that aims to supply water to 110 villages under BBMP.

Under the new phase, a plant would be set up at Torekadanahalli to process water from Shiva Balancing Reservoir and pump water to Harohalli and Tataguni pumping station.

A senior BWWSB official said the Japanese prime minister, who would be visiting India in September, would authorise the loan grant. “An advisory committee consisting of international experts would be formed to monitor the processes and a global tender would be called to execute the project. The entire project is expected to get over by 2023.”

The official added that Rs 4,100 crore was allotted to supply water from Torekadenahalli to the city through the pipeline besides Rs 1,100 crore to set up 14 sewage water treatment plants. According to senior BWSSB officials, the fifth phase would address the water crisis in the city.
